The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), in collaboration with UNEP’s United for Efficiency (U4E), held a training workshop under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Project to strengthen national capacity on sustainable cooling and cold-chain systems.
The session brought together 40 participants from government institutions, academia, and the private sector to enhance technical knowledge and support the country’s transition to energy-efficient and climate-friendly cooling solutions.
The workshop marked an important step in implementing Rwanda’s plans to introduce Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and labelling for air conditioners and refrigerators, while promoting awareness and investment in efficient technologies. Through these measures, Rwanda aims to cut emissions, reduce energy costs, and improve food security, public health, and economic resilience.
Discussions highlighted opportunities to integrate sustainable cooling into agriculture, health, and business sectors, emphasizing the importance of robust business models, safe refrigerants and strong partnerships between public and private stakeholders. The workshop concluded with a call for continued cooperation to expand climate-friendly cold-chain systems that contribute to Rwanda’s green growth and climate goals. Read more on REMA’s website.
