United for Efficiency supports The Gambia’s regulators in advancing policies, strategies and actions for the phase-out of inefficient air conditioners and refrigerators.

The initiative promotes an integrated policy approach to support the transition to energy-efficient and climate-friendly cooling technologies, ensuring that market transformation can be sustained over time by the domestic market without continued external support.

Project Details

Main Components

This project aims to develop an integrated policy strategy and legislative framework for energy-efficient air conditioners and refrigerators in The Gambia.The initiative supports broader market transformation for energy efficiency and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is implemented by UNEP U4E in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MoPE) and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs (MoFEA).

  • Capacity building for the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MoPE) on energy efficiency, air conditioners and refrigerators
  • Establishment of a Policy Working Group (PWG) to support the development and continuous update of the cooling framework
  • Capacity building for the PWG, including a study tour to promote regional south–south learning
  • National market assessment of air conditioners and refrigerators
  • Development of a National Cooling Action Plan to guide policy interventions
  • Development and implementation of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy labels
  • Awareness-raising for consumers and stakeholders on MEPS and energy labelling
