United for Efficiency supports developing countries and emerging economies in setting up effective product registration systems to help facilitate a complete market transformation to energy efficient lighting and cooling appliances
What is a product registration system?
A product registration system is a tool used to capture specific information on products to underpin policies or programmes, and to provide an initial compliance gateway for products entering the market. Product registration systems have a number of benefits, such as an increased incentivization of more efficient products or a reduced workload and costs for applicants and regulators.
U4E’s activities
With an initial focus on lighting, refrigerators and air conditioners, U4E activities are aimed at enabling developing and emerging economies to:
- Monitor which products are sold in their markets to ensure compliance with national policies
- Foster an exchange of information and experiences so that the countries can learn from each other and pursue proactive policy revisions as their markets evolve
- Reduce barriers to trade and compliance complexity for importers and manufacturers
U4E has provided technical assistance to a wide range of countries and is also active in building in-country capacities through workshops for customs officials and representatives from energy ministries. Currently, in conjunction with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), U4E is supporting the ten ASEAN countries to harmonize product registration activities in the region.
