Ghana Energy Commission and UNEP U4E are honored to announce a new partner vendor, Novotec, which is approved to sell two refrigerator models which are compliant with the rigorous requirements of ECOFRIDGES GO. Novotec is joining four existing partner vendors: SML Ghana, Ederick, Sun Electronics, and Nesstra who offer their own range of ECOFRIDGES GO approved products.
The ECOWAS Refrigerators and Air Conditioners Initiative (ECOFRIDGES) is a joint project in Ghana and Senegal, which aims to accelerate adoption of energy-efficient and climate-friendly domestic refrigerators and room air conditioners, saving consumers money on their electricity bills, relieving demand on the power sector, and mitigating impacts on the environment. A cornerstone of ECOFRIDGES activities in Ghana is a Green On-Wage (GO) financial mechanism to help make these cooling products more affordable and accessible. Local financial institutions are unlocking financing to support the purchase of thousands of sustainable cooling appliances. The scheme includes an option for consumers to turn-in an old operable cooling appliance for recycling and receive a voucher toward a future purchase from a participating vendor.
By August 2022, ECOFRIDGES GO had achieved:
- 2,082 new certified refrigerators and ACs sold
- GHS 9.4 million of finance mobilized/unlocked
- 19,446 MWh of total energy savings due to reduced residential electricity demand over the lifetime of the equipment
- 16,053 tonnes of total CO2 emission reductions over the lifetime of the equipment

ECOFRIDGES GO is made possible by funding from the Clean Cooling Collaborative and in-kind contributions from Ghana Energy Commission, Ghana Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations Environment Programme United for Efficiency (UNEP U4E) initiative and the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE).
