Main Components
Established in 2023, the ASEAN Cool Initiative aims to accelerate the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Policy Roadmap for Energy-Efficient Room Air Conditioners.
The initiative provides technical assistance and capacity building to support countries in adopting more ambitious MEPS and energy labelling requirements, with Malaysia and Singapore acting as frontrunners in implementing stronger regulations.
It is implemented by United for Efficiency (U4E), with support from the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC).
- Collection of market data on room air conditioners and technical analysis to support regulatory updates
- Development of more stringent MEPS based on market assessments and techno-economic analysis
- Support for stakeholder engagement and consultations with manufacturers and industry associations
- Cost-benefit analysis to demonstrate the impact of proposed MEPS and energy labelling
- Awareness-raising activities targeting local SME manufacturers, assemblers and suppliers
Milestones
- Advanced the revision of Malaysia's MEPS for Room Air Conditioners (RACs)
- Phased implementation aligns Malaysia with ASEAN's regional targets
- Nationwide awareness-raising activities with local Civil Society Organisations (CSO) to promote the adoption of energy-efficient RACs while advocating to the public on the revised MEPS
