According to United for Efficiency internal data projections, Chile can save more than 20 percent of its lighting electricity production and $480 million per year as a result of an energy-efficient lighting market transformation. United for Efficiency’s collaboration with the Chilean government began in 2015 in the form of policy and technical support to help achieve greenhouse gas reduction goals. Chile is committed under their Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement to reducing emissions by 30 percent below 2007 levels by 2030.
The Chilean awareness campaign group, “Cambia el Foco,” managed by Fundación Chile, plays an instrumental role in bringing consumers to the forefront of energy-efficiency decision making. The initiative uses online platforms to give out discount vouchers for energy-efficient lamps and provides energy savings calculators and other tips to online visitors.
United for Efficiency works with countries like Chile with transitioning economies that expect large growth in the coming years. This implies a larger energy consumption and growing markets for household appliances. By easing the transition to energy-efficient products, United for Efficiency aims to show that an increase in energy and cooling access does not have to be coupled with increased energy consumption.
