U4E Co-led Events at the 2022 SEforALL Forum in Kigali

United for Efficiency (U4E) is pleased to being co-leading three events at, and alongside, the 2022 Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Forum in Kigali on 17-19 May 2022.

The 2022 SEforALL Forum is the landmark global gathering bringing people together to take stock of progress, showcase success and identify solutions to achieve faster, broader gains towards sustainable energy for all. It is a platform to broker new partnerships, spur investment, address challenges and drive action towards realizing Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) and a global clean energy transition.

It will bring together the SDG7 community –Government, international/ regional organizations, development banks and funds, the private sector, entrepreneurs, philanthropies, NGOs, INGOs, civil-society organizations, academia, think-tanks, youth-led organizations, and SDG influencers, among others– with the objectives of:

 

• Brokering relationships to accelerate progress towards SDG7.
• Spurring investment towards universal energy access and a just energy transition.
• Showcasing actions and commitments made through the Energy Compacts.

Against this background, the U4E co-led sessions will showcase specific U4E projects working to help countries make the transition to more energy-efficient lighting, appliances and equipment:

Energy Efficiency Policy Actions and Market Development
Capacity Building Hub (AD11)

Energy efficiency is ‘the first fuel’ for energy security and alleviating energy poverty while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This session will recommend policy actions for energy efficiency in lighting, appliances and equipment, which consume over half of electricity globally. Actions discussed will include applying U4E’s Model Regulation Guidelines through voluntary financial mechanisms, mandatory MEPS and labels, regional policy harmonization, and market transformation approaches. It is being led jointly with UNEP and UNIDO.

Pathways to Accelerate Sustainable Cooling and Cold-Chain
ACES Open House

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold-Chain (ACES) is a first-of-kind centre dedicated to sustainable cooling, cold-chain and post-harvest management. Its headquarters is hosted by the University of Rwanda in Kigali, with Specialized Outreach and Knowledge Establishments (SPOKEs) being rolled out throughout Africa to deploy ACES solutions in real-world settings. The first of these is in Kenya.

The ACES Open House includes a series of tailored workshops at the headquarters campus for visitors to see the site plans and discuss how they can help shape and engage with ACES. A regular shuttle bus will be available between the Kigali Convention Centre and ACES campus so Forum attendees can easily access the site.

ACES’ mission is to accelerate the uptake of sustainable cooling and cold-chain solutions in the agriculture and health sectors in Africa, improving livelihoods, health, food and nutritional security of rural communities, thereby bringing environmental, social and economic development.

It is led jointly with the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), the University of Rwanda, UK Defra and the Centre for Sustainable Cooling.

Designing Sustainable Cold-Chains for Food and Health
Capacity Building Hub (AD11)

Sustainable cold-chains require a systems approach built on understanding scale (current and future), cooling needs and equitable business models. This session will walk through how to model, define and cost the actions needed to facilitate the deployment of cold-chain in equitable, sustainable and resilient ways, using examples and analysis from Bangladesh, Kenya and Nigeria. Lead Organizers include ACES (of which U4E is a co-founder) and The World Bank.
