United for Efficiency

Training future generations of energy efficiency professionals

The IEA Energy Efficiency 2022 report released in November 2022 highlighted that the largest future energy efficiency opportunities will be found in emerging and developing economies that are particularly exposed to the challenges of surging energy costs, supply disruptions and looming energy shortages. They account for around 60% of global final energy demand in 2022, and this is expected to grow almost 20% by 2030 under current policy scenarios. They therefore have a critical role to play in achieving global energy security and climate goals and support for practitioners in these countries is paramount.  United for Efficiency has been invited to participate as a trainer in this year’s IEA Energy Efficiency Policy Training Week in Paris on 17-21 April 2023.

This is the 14th annual training week from the Energy Efficiency in Emerging Economies (E4) programme which aims, amongst other objectives, to aims to build capacity of policymakers to develop and implement effective energy efficiency initiatives in their home countries. An objective that aligns closely with UNEP-U4E’s own.

It is the first in person training week since 2020, when the COVID pandemic necessitated a move to virtual events.  Although virtual events have been successful in allowing the training to engage with more people at once and across a broader range of geographies, the inability to hold in person activities presented barriers to delivery of engaging training experiences. The greatest value of this training comes not just from providing a platform for energy efficiency practitioners to learn from leading experts in the field, but also by helping people from a range of geographical and economic contexts to share their experiences and learn from each other.

Harnessing the true potential of energy efficiency depends on having people with the skills to implement effective policy and providing policymakers with the capacity and options to implement effective policy will help to maximise the multiple benefits of energy efficiency, both now and in the long term.

Activities during the training week are designed to provide hands-on experience to participants as well as opportunities to exchange with colleagues from around the world.
