United for Efficiency

Caribbean Cooling Initiative webinar

This webinar, organized by UNEP’s sub-regional office for the Caribbean in Kingston, Jamaica in collaboration with the Caribbean Cooling Initiative (C-COOL), discusses the benefits of a transition to energy-efficient and climate-friendly air conditioners and refrigerators, and the pathway to achieve it in the context of the initiative.

While air conditioners and refrigerators provide essential services in the tropical climate of the Caribbean, inefficient models remain common and electricity is wasted. This waste has big implications: residents and businesses suffer from expensive power bills, governments are saddled with increasing demand on imported energy and pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are exacerbated.

The C-COOL project, launched in 2018 in collaboration with UNEP’s United for Efficiency (U4E) programme aims to showcase the myriad of benefits associated with transitioning to energy-efficient and climate-friendly air conditioners and refrigerators. U4E brings together leading experts from international organisations, the private sector, and civil society groups to provide tailored technical assistance to participating governments and stakeholders.

On March 24 2021, Jamaica finalized its National Cooling Strategy, the second such strategy adopted in the region after Trinidad and Tobago.
