This Project is a part of the global initiative United for Efficiency (U4E), created by the UN Environment and its partners.
The Workshop shall serve as a platform to discuss major principles of the Project realization and provide an opportunity to ask questions. All the comments and recommendations shall be taken into consideration during the course of the Project implementation.
The objective of the project: is the transformation of Kazakhstan market towards energy-efficient appliances and equipment, thereby reducing electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The project shall focus on the introduction of minimum energy performance standards, as well as provide support in the introduction of voluntary high-efficiency performance standards in conjunction with product labelling and government procurement rules.
The project shall work on creating incentives for purchasing new appliances to replace the old and energy-intensive ones, support of vulnerable groups, including, if possible, institutions which provide special help to women and retirees.
The project will pursue regulations and labelling for the three categories of appliances and equipment with the highest electricity consumption and impact – refrigerators, industrial motors, and distribution transformers. Other technologies such as room air conditioners and washing machines will be added if the expected benefits are justified.
The project is directly aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 13, Climate Action, and its targets of integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning, and of improving education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation.
