United for Efficiency supports Costa Rica’s policymakers and regulators to advance policies, strategies and actions for the phase-out of inefficient lighting and refrigeration products. Emphasis is on an integrated policy approach so that a transition can be sustained by the domestic market without continued external support or resources.

DEVELOPMENT OF A MARKET FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHTING, AIR CONDITIONERS AND REFRIGERATORS
The objective of this GEF-funded project is to accelerate improvements in energy efficiency under Costa Rica’s public procurement programmes and reduce Costa Rica’s energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
Main Components
- Energy diagnosis to identify opportunities to replace conventional appliances with energy efficient appliances in highest energy consuming public institutions
- Training for market actors on sustainable public procurement
- Establish revolving loan fund to finance large-scale replacements in public sector
- Development of national capacities for environmentally sound management
