United for Efficiency country partner Chile’s new website encourages consumers to switch to light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs as part of a national consumer awareness campaign.
The website is part of a Chilean consumer awareness-raising campaign, encouraging a nation-wide switch to climate friendly and energy-efficient LED lighting. The Chilean website includes LED discount vouchers, energy-efficiency tips and savings calculators.
The LED is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly developing lighting technologies. LEDs shine for up to 25 years. The electricity savings for consumers will be over 85 per cent in countries phasing out incandescent lamps and jumping to LEDs.
Fundación Chile, a nonprofit organization that develops local and international networks and delivers high-impact solutions in areas such as sustainability and education, runs the website.
Fundación Chile has been selected by the Chilean Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment to execute its United for Efficiency country project “Delivering the transition to energy-efficient lighting in Chile,” running from 2015 to 2018. The national consumer awareness-raising campaign is a key component of the initiative.
The United for Efficiency country project contributes to the Chilean national energy and climate goals. Electricity consumption in Chile is expected to grow by 7 per cent a year, taking into account the expected economic and population growth trends.
In order to meet the future electricity demand while reducing its reliance on imported energy, the Chilean Government plans to reduce energy demand by 20 per cent by 2025. One quarter of these reductions will be achieved with the support of the United for Efficiency country project alone.
Chile is one of nineteen United for Efficiency partner countries. United for Efficiency supports developing and emerging economies in their efforts to move their markets to energy-efficient and climate-friendly appliances and equipment.
